When I was still a child (not that many years ago) the Commonwealth Games were touted as the world's second most important sports meets after the Olympics. Not long after, the Asian Games seem to have taken over that title.

Taking a look at the current medal tally of the ongoing Games, it seems that only the top 10 or 12 countries 'matter'; the rest like Cayman Island, Malta, Papua New Guinea, etc, appear to be 'fillers'. In other words, the competition seems to be taking place among the top 10 countries. I contrast this with the Southeast Asian Games and it's the exact scenario (only 10 participating countries in these regional games so the fight is purely among the top 5).

If you are a Briton, what do the Commonwealth Games mean to you?

In what way do you feel that only the top 10 or 12 countries 'matter' exactly?

I don't really care about them, if I'm to be honest.

I imagine they're relevant to those competing no matter what country they're from

I never paid much attention until this year and that's because they are being held not too far from my area. We've been watching and of course always root for the Scottish competitor. Didn't attend any of the games but will go into Glasgow this weekend to catch some of the street entertainment.

Exactly! You Scots are doing a great job with the games and it looks to me like there are plenty of people having a good time, if any miserable s*ds don't want to join in then it really is their choice but as long as any event brings people together the way these games have then iI believe ts very relevant.

Friendship.

How are we supposed to measure success or importance of an athletics event? The wealth of the competitors? Number of TV viewers or commercials? Corporate sponsorship? The Olympics long ago gave up any pretence of amateurism, in favour of greed and corruption of its officials.
