Has anyone had any experience of getting a J1 Internship visa to the U.S.? Our daughter has just been offered a 4 month internship with the Legal Aid Society in New York, starting at the end of January, but they don't 'sponsor' people. Therefore she has to find a company that will sponsor her and do all the necessary form filling to enable her to get this particular visa.
We have contacted a couple of these sponsoring companies that are mentioned on the U.S. Embassy website but neither have got back to us yet which doesn't bode well especially as time is running out.
Has anyone used a company like this ?
We know that there are a lot of scams out there with this sort of thing and want to make sure we go down the right route.
TIA

Good luck. J1's are harder to come by now. Usually you have to be skilled in the job before you come over.
Jobs are getting scarce so that might be a problem too.

Usually the company offering the job is the sponsor. And the paperwork takes time even for a tourist visa, so imagine the time for a working visa. (Our paper took like a year)

Just send her over on "holiday" - 90 day stay. No visa required. As an intern, she shouldn't be getting paid...correct? She can explore companies that offer J1 visas while she is here in the States.

Just be aware that this is illegal. If your daughter is caught, she will not be permitted back into the US. EVER.

Only if she's getting paid. If she's doing volunteer work- which is essentially what an unpaid internship is- then this is perfectly legal. In fact, that's how I've done study abroad programs in two countries as per the instructions of the programs themselves and how these study abroad programs allow students to study in the US over a short period in the summer as well. Perfectly legal as long as they get a tourist visa at the airport when they come in and don't work or overstay the visa.
