I know it's an essential skill in the cities, but having spent the last 3 years in El Paso I've notice how few people actually know how to do it. Also I've heard a lot of traffic schools aren't teaching it anymore. Is this skill fading?
Did it last night. Takes me two tries since I don't do it regularly. The part that makes me uncomfortable about it is if the traffic on the street while I'm parellel parking. Watched others parellel as well.
Parellel parking is required to pass the road test in New York State dunno about other states.
After I got my car, the first time I parellel parked I got in the first try. Unfortunately, I parked in front of a driveway (which was why the space was available).
The majority of Americans no longer live in urbanized cities where curb parking is common, but in suburbs.
I know Detroit used to have parking meters all over (along the old commercial strips and in the old town centers), but outside of Downtown they've since been removed over the last 20-30 years.
Parallel parking has always been one of those things you learn from practice, but there are very few opportunities for that type of practice now.
Ehh I guess it depends on how often you do it. Plus my car now has the camera for reverse, can really get tight with that without touching. I have gotten lazy with that element
The initial reverse and getting the back end in tight is key though
When I was a public health nurse, I got very good at parallel parking. I could get into a space not much bigger than my car. Don't do it so much now, but I can still manage. There is still a lot of parellel parking around here in Denver, Boulder, Louisville, other older towns.
Parallel parking is a crime against nature. I refuse to participate.
(Actually, where I live you are expected to hump your car up over the curb, and then park all but the two outside wheels on the "sidewalk." This is a rather cowboy maneuver, so folks leave lots of space between cars.)
I've gotten pretty lousy at it. I can still do it, but it does take longer. We've also got some really nasty curbs around here so my cheater method of just backing up (slowly) until I hit the curb isn't the greatest idea as you could end up taking off your bumper rather than just hitting it with your tire.
Having driven a large single axle truck backwards literally thousands of miles around trees, fences power poles, septic tanks, bushes, stumps and the occasional customer trying to "help" me who is just distracting me........ all the while only using mirrors and having to end up perfectly lined up with a window you can't see. Forgive me for laughing at people that can't back a car into a parking space. You have a right side mirror for a reason, learn how to use it, it is your friend.
