I think the city of Chicago is more urban in a classic sense than Los Angeles, while the Southland as a whole is more urban than Chicagoland.
However, the city of Los Angeles is catching up quick to Chicago and is probably more urban than many realize. The residential built environment is very close to that of Chicago (certainly the numbers are inflated a bit due to higher household sizes), but it is the commercial corridors that are really lacking. People do forget that Chicago has a large bungalow belt and both cities are close in % of multifamily housing (Chicago may have the advantage in this regard, not sure).
Obviously Chicago, in fact, you would be hard pressed to find a more 'urban' city anywhere in the world.
You can't be serious. It would be easy to find FAR more urban cities than Chicago right here in the U.S. NYC, anyone?
And globally? I would say almost all cities Chicago's size (9 million+) feel more urban than Chicago. Chicago is actually very non-urban compared to most major cities of its size.
The vast majority of Chicagoland residents live in single family homes on spacious lots, while in most major global cities people live in apartment buildings or extremely tiny single family home lots.
Chicago only feels dense downtown, but 95% of the metro area doesn't feel dense by huge city standards.
Obviously Chicago, in fact, you would be hard pressed to find a more 'urban' city anywhere in the world.
Eh. Like valentro said, there are plenty of other cities. New York City is the most urban in the states, after that you can debate between a few others for the next most urban. Asia has plenty.

OK New York is a given, name some other FAR more urban cities than Chicago. Probably San Francisco, but FAR more means that there is a list of cities that you can name here in the US that is more urban. I'll make it easy give us 5 more cities in the US. Philly, Boston, DC (maybe) who else.

True, though in a lot of cities elsewhere in the world that also holds true with oftentimes an even larger percentage of people (and oftentimes total number) living in dense areas and a smaller proportion of people living in sparser suburbs.

Right, but that isn't dense, especially not by global standards.
The claim was that you would be hard pressed to find denser cities anywhere, yet I can't think of a single non-U.S. city anywhere on earth that is Chicago's size or larger, and less dense than Chicago.
Mexico city may have a denser population than Chicago but i wouldn't call it more urban.
