I didn't vote because I'm kinda undecided. Crime does play a role for me. But so does price. And while I like the idea of being able to walk more and depend on my car less, I don't really like high density areas.
Your question is too simplistic. There are too many other factors involved in deciding where to live.

I'm aware people factor in many things (job, cost of living, transit, crime, etc) but was curious how much crime sways them.
I personally won't live in an area that has a lot of crime. But, if the crime rate of cities was down to 1500/100k people (similar to Singapore and Japa I think people would migrate back into them.
There are inner city neighborhoods where the crime rate is similar to the suburbs in the metro area. And there are suburbs with high crime rates. It's a matter of demographics, though I imagine usually a city would have a slightly higher crime rate because more people pass through.
