I am considering moving to SLC to attend college and my boyfriend would be comming with me. He isn't attending college and only has a high school diploma. He is willing to do almost anything to pay the rent but would like a career and not just a job. Does anyone have any sugestions?

I have quite a few snowborder friends who are in a similar position (not the career but a nice job that pays the rent). I am not in this position, so please take this as complete opinion, without practical experience ...

The service industry is huge in SLC. There are a ton of wait-staff type positions around where good money can be found. However, when you say career, Starbucks pops into my mind. People at Starbucks seem to be friendly. They earn pretty good money. They provide healthcare for part-time employees. They have flexible hours. There is a career path (if you want it).

I know it's not perfect but I think its a pretty good path that could either work for now or for later. They are also close to the U.

Also you could try American Express and UPS they have big service centers here. Utah is the call center capital of the world it seems, so there are those types of job. If I was in that position, I might choose work as a bank teller. Whatever it is,tThe pay won't be great -- probably $10-12 an hour or so.

Default Tech Job?

You haven't indicated whereabouts in SLC you will be locating, but if it's in the southern part he might consider a job at IM Flash Technologies. They are a tech company that produces computer memory (for cell phones, ipods etc) and have just opened their plant in Lehi, so they are in a hiring phase at the moment. Just google "IM Flash" to access their website. Under Careers you will see a "Production Operator" link. Although a lot of the positions in the company require engineering degrees, Operators only require a high school diploma. You will be able to read about the company and what the operator job involves at the website. I'm not sure how much an hour operators earn, but it might be worth a look if he is interested in a "career" in the tech industry. IMFT will offer extra training classes and certification if he is interested in furthering his career. Typically such companies also offer assistance with external education if he eventually decides he wants to pursue it further and perhaps study for an engineering degree one day.
