The Pacific Northwest of the USA is probably the last great untapped market for the NHL! And since Seattle is the largest, richest city in that region, would you approve of them getting an NHL team or not! Why? Thanks!
The people of Vancouver may or may not approve, but the owners of the Vancouver Canucks would very likely have an issue with their territory being infringed upon.
Besides territory issues, KeyArena in Seattle only holds 15,000 for hockey which is about 5000 short of the number required for NHL hockey.
I think it would be awesome. I would love to see a strong PNW rivalry and I think the demand and corporate sponsors are definitely there. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened sometime in the next 10 years.
May I suggest a "Cascadia" hockey team to start by sharing with Seattle and the northwest?
The more we drop that border attitude and any way we can do it the better.
We almost pulled that off with soccer in the early eighties. It was incredible to go down to Seattle for the two games there and attend the rivalry here in Vancouver.
I dont know what the NHL is thinking. We should be pulling out teams from the deep south and putting them in places like Seattle, Hamilton, Quebec, Milwaukee, where hockey has a following.
I would love to see hockey in Seattle! Our next move needs to be close to an NHL team (within 90 minutes or so), and I'd like to move to northwest WA, but my husband says there's a waiting list for Canucks season tickets.
If the Canucks are regularly sold out, there is enough interest for another team.

hmm yes and no if you are a die hard canucks fan I doubt people will buy hats jerseys and other gear with onther team logo on it or season tickets for their games. But I do support a seattle team or a portland team. problem is getting tax payers and big business support to build a 20,000 seat arena but if they did get a team it would be great to have it in another hockey loving city.

I'm sure some Canucks fans are not die-hard, they just love hockey and don't have any other teams to choose from. If Seattle had a team, some of the Washington people could go down there and open up more seats for the Canucks fans in the Blue Line. My husband has always disliked the Canucks (sorry), but if they were the only NHL team within a couple hours' drive, he would want season tickets anyway.
Only three teams in the NHL have arenas with 20,000 seats. Many have less than 17,000. Is this a new rule that applies only to new or relocating teams? Or is it more of a suggestion, or a rumor. Anyone know for sure?

The NHL is a 30 team league.
21 of those teams play in a venue with a capacity greater than 18,000.
Only 3 teams play in a venue having a capacity of less than 17,000 and none of those dip below 16,000.
There certainly is a set of arena standards which must be met by any new location, but common sense also says that teams must be able to generate revenue to offset expansion fees/relocation fees (as well as the usual operating expenses).
Arena capacity, corporate boxes, and income for peripheral arena operations are a very important part of any team's revenue stream.
KeyArena (15,000) in Seattle would require major renovations/expansion in order to make an NHL team viable.
