My husband is being relocated to Camarillo ( I won't be working, so we will live on one income). We have two small children. Everything I read about Camarillo is positive, but the price for housing, which is very high compared to where we live. Please advise us on where to live, I have heard thousand oaks is really nice for families, how long is the commute? Where could we find good schools? a nice affordable neighborhood to raise a family? How much do you need to earn to live a decent life with two children in or close to Camarillo? I really appreciate all your help.

Renting or buying? Budget?

Thousand Oaks will be for the most part even more expensive per square foot. It will also be warmer in summer. However, it is an excellent place for raising kids with excellent schools and amenities.

Camarillo also is good for kids, though the schools are a bit more hit and miss. The weather is about as good as it gets.

The commute from TO to Camarillo isn't bad but it sounds like it won't be necessary. One other slight advantage of TO is should he lose his job and need to find work east, like in the San Fernando Valley, or the Conejo Valley, then TO is that much closer - probably why housing is a bit more there.

Here is a school performance map for camarillo

Other place to look is the northeastern side of Ventura (family friendly).

You didn't mention where you live now... so it's hard to say if culture shock will be an issue. Camarillo is wonderful but that entire area is very pricey. Overall schools are better in T.O. but both offer you safety anywhere you choose to live. Prepare to spend at and above half a million for a 'starter' home.

Maybe even in the low to mid $400Ks. Here are a couple of nice early 1980s homes in Mission Oaks:

5467 Quailridge Dr, Camarillo, CA 93012

5432 Butterfield St, Camarillo, CA 93012

Recent sales, SFR, $400K-$500K, 4BR+ in Camarillo:

Thank you both for your messages. We are coming from Latin America, we lived in the US before (in NY, but we still had no kids). We would be renting at least for the first year, until we get a feel of things, and then we would try to buy. How much would the rent be for a three bedroom house or apt?

Thanks again!
