Hi, I live in Seattle and am planning on moving somewhere in New England. I work for a Kroger owned grocery store here in Seattle. I am in the union and make pretty good money for a cashier. ($19). I’m not sure where to go in New England, but wherever I go I want to transfer to another Kroger owned store that also has a union, so that I can keep my pay and seniority. Has anyone worked in any of the Kroger owned stores anywhere there? I’m just starting out and don’t plan on moving for a few years at least.

You won't make that in a grocery store in Vermont. Employers have the upper hand here and take full advantage of it.

My high school aged daughter is a cashier and is making 10 cents above minimum wage. There is no union, but I know some places have unions. There is not a Krogers in Vermont and I don't think any of the chains are owned by Kroger. $19/hr is more than the average person in Vermont makes. Are you positive your pay transfers? That would put your pay close to a store manager.

I think speaking with your employer about where they are willing to transfer you to would be a good start...

I did a quick search on the Kroger website for you. The closest owned Kroger store is a jewelry store in NY state and the coldest grocery store is in West Virginia.

I think cashiers make about $7-$8 / hr around here. Managers make about $19-$21/hr. Krogers doesn't have any chains at all in New England.

It's worth working a $7/hr job as a cashier mainly for the health insurance benefits - those are worth a lot more than your salary.
