Hello there, my husband and I are moving to VT from CT in the next couple months. He got a job in Colchester and we are having a hard time finding houses that have the acreage, privacy, and affordability close to his job. I found a great place in Johnson but it appears to be about 34 miles from Colchester. My husband is used to a long commute here in CT (about 30 miles) and our winters have lately been (from what I've heard) comparable to VT. Is this a bad idea? We would really like a little bit of land with a decent house but haven't had much luck in any of the towns within 30 minutes. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone. Feeling awfully discouraged lately.

It might work, since he is used to a long commute and knows how to drive in winter weather. Traffic isn't quite as bad as other places. Fairfax might be a bit better.
It's not a terrible drive, and you're on Route 15 the whole way, but in winter I think he'd get tired of it. Vermont does a pretty good job of clearing the roads, which helps.
I think Harry's right: other spots along Route 15, including Cambridge or Jeffersonville, are worth a look.
Have you been looking at nneren.com? Right now I'm seeing 11 properties in Colchester under $225,000.
Milton, Georgia, Fairfax, Fairfield and even St Albans might all offer you a bit of acreage and modest home for that price.
Have you looked at For Sale By Owner also?
