My cell phone has a Vermont number, as is my skype. One of the fun things about using a foreign area code is that the telemarketers who attempt to trick by using a "local" number get outted every time. Also, with the small population compared to the large number of available numbers, the random dialers don't see the state as a particularly enticing one, unlike Florida or Alabama.

When I moved from MD to VT, I kept my MD phone numbers. I still get marketing calls from MD. Totally confuses them when I say I don't live in MD anymore.

But when I need to give my number here to someone in VT and tell them 410, they just take it in stride. I have a friend here that still has a Hawaii area code.
