Hello, All!
I moved to the state about 3 months ago and I have been hit wave after wave on taxes and it looks like here comes another one. I have to register my car in September for new plates and it says I have to front 6% use tax on the car. For me that will be $1500. Which, point blank, right now I just don’t have. Are there any exceptions to this or are there payment plans? I have been on hold forever and the dmv is closed this weekend. Trying not to hyperventilate over this new fun fact I just learned.
Thanks for any help or insight.

VT has pretty good websites for most things. Here is the one that applies to your situation. My read is you'll get credit for the sales tax you paid when you bought the car.

Moving to Vermont | Department of Motor Vehicles

If VT didn't collect sales tax on cars coming from other States there wouldn't be any car dealers here as everyone would buy their cars in NH.

As noted above, if you paid sales tax on the car in another state you get credit for that. Make sure you bring proof that you did when you go to register the car.

Wherever your car was registered, you should have the old registration. Bring it with you. On it, there is a breakdown on fees. As stated above, you will get credit for your old registration tax in the other state. I'm guessing under $500 app fee, taxes, and other for VT? Depends on car and how old. I could never figure it out. I just bring several hundred bucks cash. (grin)

When I moved here from MD and registered the car in VT, I showed the sales receipt for the car... indicating I had already paid 6% tax to MD. If your old state had a lower percent sales tax, I think VT will charge the difference. It's a one time fee.
