I'm currently living out of my car in New England. My license is in Minnesota. I was told it's possible to register a vehicle in Vermont while holding an out of state license. Is this true? If so, what is the process?

You need a mailing address. You also need proof of insurance when the car is inspected and an insurance company would want the Vermont address where it’s garaged. I had green plates on one of my cars for 25 years as a nonresident but I had an address with mail delivery and the insurance company insured homes and cars in two states.

The Minnesota sales tax is higher than the Vermont sales tax so you would just need proof that you paid MN sales tax. If you didn’t pay sales tax, they look up the car on Blue Book and make you pay sales tax on book value. So title, the original bill of sale showing sales tax or similar paperwork, and you walk into an RMV, fill out the form, and pay the registration and title fee.

I haven’t done a transaction since 2015 but I don’t think any of that has changed. I briefly got a Vermont license last year when I couldn’t get one anywhere else. Like most states now, they give you a temporary paper license and mail the real one a few days afterwards.
