Are there any good game consoles for relativey cheap where I can plug in Asteroids, Robotron, Defender, Joust, Donkey Kong, Paperboy, etc? I have never moved on from early/mid 80's games that I played as a kid at the arcades and have never owned a tv gaming system of any kind. However today I did buy a cheap 12 in 1 plug n play pacman/galaga/pole position game for $20 at toys-r-us and now wondering about what else might be worth looking into. Are there any cheaper gaming consoles with good controls to replicate those old games? If so I could even buy used on ebay or craigslist. Thanks for the help.
you can look online for a machine called the FC Duo (sometimes marketed as the FC Twin) which handles both NES and SNES carts which will cover some of that as well as the FC Plus which is the same thing but adds in Genesis hardware as well. For some fo the even older stuff you might look at the Atari Flashback which was an all in one system with built in rom images of several atari 2600 and 7800 games.
Most (all?) of these games are available on Xbox Live Arcade for pretty cheap - of course, you'd have to have an Xbox 360 (and internet connectivity) first. You can probably find a stripped down/used 360 on eBay for pretty cheap.
The games are almost identical to the original arcade versions, but the problem is the controls - the 360 controller is no classic joystick, and may not be to your liking. It seemed to work okay for some games (DigDug, Paperboy), but not so great for others (Defender, PacMan). I know that you can buy joystick-style controllers for the 360, but I've never tried them.
You can also use the Wii.. there are a TON of games you can download there.
Also, if you like the little dedicated handhelds, there are several other Jaxx controller contraptions you can hook up to your tv with built-in arcade/atari/intellivision games (to name a few). I think your question is a bit broad... is there a specific genre you are looking for?
The cheapest solution would be to pick up a Playstation 1, which are really cheap (>$20) and some arcade compilation discs, like Williams Arcade Classics or Namco Museum, which run about $5-$10 each. Between those two alone you'll get a big number of classics.
OMG, it is a long times ago I play it....I could remeber is super mario
