Do you know any old-school platform games where you can get EXP Points and level up the character? (defeating, RPG)

I have always felt that this could be a pretty interesting combination - a kind of platform/action sidescroller game where the character earn EXP Points from defeating enemies.
Do you know any games like this?

Basically, I am looking for some game that's more or less like "Contra or Metroid with EXP Points".

The closest I have come to a platform game like this is probably the dungeons and battle screens in "Zelda 2: The Adventure Of Link" for the Famicom/NES.

Faxanadu would be a good fit for that also on the NES. Excellent game. Much better than Zelda 2 but not as widely known.

Heh, I have never really considered Zelda 2 a bad or mediocre game at all, I find it quite well-designed with good controls and interesting dungeons. =P
It's just very different from most other Zelda games, but it is a well-made action-RPG, in my opinion.

But anyway, thanks for the tip, I gave Faxanadu a while ago and it seems very enjoyable.
