My boyfriend, my 5 yr old son, and I are planning on moving to Virginia in just a couple weeks. We were planning on moving to Williamsburg however after looking into it more it seems a little too country for us. So I was hoping you guys could help me! What is a safe suburban area close to the city and jobs (my boyfriend works in security in a casino at the moment and I'm hoping to find a job in business) with a good school system and affordable rent near shopping and museums and parks and other family oriented activities between Richmond and Williamsburg?

There is not much between Richmond and Williamsburg. Which area will you be working in? If you will be heading in opposite directions, I might suggest Highland Springs on the east end of Richmond. For what you want, I would stick closer to Richmond. Williamsburg is a historical mecca, and is popular with retirees, but has some of the things you describe such as parks and recreation. It is also on the outskirts of the Norfolk/Va Beach metro, so in a way, it is suburbia. In my opinion, Richmond has better museums and I get the impression that the schools in the suburbs are top notch. Hope this helps!
