My wife and I are thinking about moving to Va within the next 2-4 yrs. We are African American(My wife is half Cuban). I'm 27 and she's 25, we have a 16m/o son and a baby on the way. I have always heard very good things about Va(visited briefly as a teenager) but other than that everything I know is from Internet research.

Ive lived in big metropolitan cities my whole life, so I'm looking for something that has a medium to small town feel(Not bored to death small) that still has excitement. I will be buying land and building my home and I've also been blessed and fortunate enough to retire at 30, if I chose. So housing cost and job finding/commute isn't really an issue but I still hate traffic( I hear NoVa is terrible anytime of day).
What is important are:
Schools for my kids(Private schools if available)
Safety
Diversity
Local attractions and variety of activites.
Close enough to the big cities(2hrs or less)

I'm open to just about any area. I hear Charlottesville, Albermale County, Hanover County and most of NoVa are very nice?

Thnk you for the advice!

No Va is traffic hell but it is the most diverse area in VA (my opinion). All the other areas you mentioned are nice, safe and do have some diversity but not at the level of California, Charlottesvile has a world known university & health system (UVA) which is a plus. Abermarle/Charlott has more winter snow than Hanover County which is a suburb of Richmond, VA. Of course you will need to visit for more than a few days. Good Luck
