Hello,I posted in another part of the forum and nice member said I should try this part.

Hi

We are staying in Martinsville for 1 week,I wanted to know how safe is the place is to stay in.

Ofcourse we will have out of state plates and will be in a hotel giving more attention to us.

I was told VA had a big drug problem, with break-ins to cars etc

I will be going to Fieldale Va everyday for bussiness

The Address is, The Great RD,Fieldale va

I was told only 15K live in Martinsville

Just thought I could get some help first hand from members that live here or have

Also what famous resturants does martinsville have, that might have been on Diners,Drive-ins and dives to check out

BBQ

Thankyou

The Martinsville and Danville areas have suffered a lot economically in recent years, as textile, furniture, and other manufacturing jobs have shut down and relocated overseas. Martinsville is noted for its NASCAR racing track, and the city also has a science museum. The cost of living is quite low, due to the local unemployment rate. You should enjoy the scenic "Blue Ridge Parkway" winding highway, local hiking trails, bluegrass music, barbeque diners, antique shops, and other elements of Appalachian culture in such nearby towns as Galax, VA (site of the great annual "Fiddlers' Convention" each August) and Mount Airy, NC (TV star Andy Griffith's "Mayberry"). It is sadly true that methamphetamine drugs are epidemic in the southern Appalachian region. I'm sure others here can give you more detailed information than I.

While most of southwest and southside Virginia have very low crime, certain cities in this area are suffering horribly with unemployment and the like and have relatively high crime rates. I know Martinsville unemployment is and has been bad for years (not just the recession) - something like 20%. I hear more crime stories from Danville, VA though (about 25 miles east of Martinsville)

I'm a native of Martinsville but don't live there anymore. It is safe and you have nothing to worry about. I've never felt unsafe there. I used to practice criminal defense there and I can say that there isn't a lot of random crime there. Most of the theft is shoplifting from Wal-mart or Sears. Most of the crime committed against people are among those who know each other and have a dispute that gets out of control.

You should try the Dixie Pig, that's a semi-famous barbecue place that has won awards in competitions. Other local restaurants I would recommend: Wild Magnolia's in east Martinsville and I would Hugo's in uptown Martinsville. Try Captain Tom's for seafood; that's in Ridgeway. And there are two chain restaurants: Applebee's and Texas Steakhouse.

The drive-in theater shut down a long time ago though there is one in Eden, NC which is 20 miles away.

Can I ask what kind of business would a person need to conduct in Martinsville??? LOL.

I've never stayed at the Dutch Inn since I'm from there but they have a nice seafood buffet on Friday nights.

Martinsville has a Kmart but no Target. Kmart is on highway 220 South (business) in Ridgeway. The closest Target is in Danville which is about 30 miles away. Sears in in the Liberty Fair Mall. Have fun.

Ha!! Martinsville is faaaaaaaaaaaar from being Detroit. I've stayed at the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express (Collinsville area) there numerous times in the last 6 years and have never had any kind of problems. Word of advice though....stay away from the Dutch Inn. Just not up to par on it being clean compared to other hotels. Food is pretty good there though. There is a really good Mexican place across the street from the Wal-mart and a japanese steakhouse in the same plaza near Wal-mart. All in all Martinsville is safe don't buy into all the "stories" because that is what they mostly are....just stories.

The people in the Martinsville area are the most open and friendliest I have met, they will gladly give you directions and they are always welcoming! On the unemployment thing, I can never understand why that part of the state still has such economic challenges. It has easy access to the Piedmont Triad Intl Airport, great highway access, etc. With its high jobless rate it should be a candidate for a major manufacturer such as a automobile plant. Oh well, I guess manufacturing is not something America wants anymore, only low wage jobs.

I live between Martinsville and Danville in Axton my son works in Collinsville at Star tek Form 5 to 2 am and has never had a problem driving there but of course there is crime everywhere you go these days .I shop in downtown Martinsville and love all the shops there .I found places like the mixed bag that sells furniture and right down from that place is a great discount fabric store .There are areas of course I would not go but most areas during the day are safe .I also shop in Danville and drive to Eden NC and Riedsville nC al nice places to shop and I have not had a problem yet .There are so many great little shops in most of these towns if you look around .If you check these towns out on the internet most have listing of things to see or do and places to stay .The dutch Inn does have good food .goodluck
