Regarding older buildings not being maintained. This is an issue everywhere. Cost to rebuild can be enormous. Current wants/needs are generally different. Current codes can be difficult if not impossible to meet. And it can be very difficult to find the knowledged/skilled/dependable people to do the rebuild work.

As for Staunton becoming over built. I would not lose sleep. DE is getting the major influx from the northerners because of lower taxes. DE also has packaged communities which seniors want. Also easier to get back up north to visit family.

Has your husband visited Rockbridge County/Lexington? The “city” sounds like his kind of place, very Old World, and the county has numerous next-gen hobby farms (at least one raised by Polyface grads) and bed/breakfasts. Staunton is 45 minutes north, Roanoke same only south (both straight shot on I-81). If you’re not needing to find jobs, Rockbridge County could be your cup of tea.

(Also, Lexington does allow city chickens, after a hard-fought battle).

Carlito

I also grew up in Broomall PA., and now reside in NC... Ironically I was in Staunton VA for a few weeks. To be honest I wish I never left. I loved the area and loved the people. It was the best feeling like the old days. I am trying to work my way back to Staunton VA. Hopefully, sooner rather than later.

Wow! Small world!

I lived right by the Country Squire diner on West Chester Pk. from 1981 to '93 (near the high school before that). SE PA will always have a place in my heart.

Good luck with your journey back to Stuanton or wherever you may land

So, did you move to Staunton? we visit our children there 4 times/yr. Neat town with a mix of political views. They had an 8acre property 10 min out of downtown in the county. Unbelievable views. Schools (Churchville) not so good. The moved back to the city limits into a nice family neighborhood. Pluses- neat downtown, fun weekly farmers market, great views. Downside- few employment opportunities, high real estate prices due to influx of NOVA retirees, vestiges of old south prejudices. A nice place to live.
