Anywhere west of I-81 and south of Roanoke should qualify. Not necessarily crime, but it's an economic Mordor.

I don't think it's that bad. I lived in NYC so I know iffy neighborhoods and I've never felt afraid shopping there.
That's a very ivory tower viewpoint.

"YorktownGal" implies you're from the much wealthier neighbor city and probably only travel to the commercial and protected Oyster Point area to do some shopping at Kohl's, Costco, or the like.

You have no reason to go to the "bad parts". Go to the east end, or deep into Denbigh, and tell me it's not that bad. I used to work cable all over Newport News. I assure you that the nickname of "Bad News" is well earned.

Bottom line. Newport News has a high crime rate. The last seminar I taught there was a couple years ago and several of the local officers were ready to move their families from the area and were asking about working in NOVA. No idea if any ever left NN but when your officers are looking to bail you know there are issues.

If Yorktowngal is in an ivory tower, y’all are a bunch of drama queens.
Downtown Newport News isn't scary and Denbigh certainly isn’t. The East End is sad but not any sadder than the poor parts of any town in America (at least in NN you’ve got a nice river to look at).

The parts of Newport News that give it the “Bad News” nickname are tiny relative to the population and geography of the city.

Its crazy how perception shapes your reality. I've always been aware of downtown NN's issues and even spent time with friends down there a few times when I went to ODU. But as someone who grew up in DC in the 90s, I had always considered Denbigh to be a nice, bucolic in city suburb. I had no idea people viewed the area as "scary".

I came across this video.

What do you all think about the places mentioned? Do you agree or disagree?

I definitely hate my town of Marion but it looks like I'll be moving to Roanoke soon.

In any case, I love NN and considering moving there where my inlaws lived for a couple years, Safe, lots to do, family oriented.
Every place has a nasty part, big deal.
NN is working on its rough parts anyhow. https://www.nnva.gov/2401/Denbigh-Warwick-Area-Plan

I'd move to Newport News before any of the other cities on that "top 10" list, tbh.

The NW area is generally considered the safest part. Back when the drive to identify illegals (when stopped for something they did illegally) was forming in PWC under Corey Stewart a large number bailed from Manassas and a lot went to places like Culpeper and Winchester amongst other places. Crime rates went up in these places and in Culpeper is still up in places. No one is blaming the illegals but there was likely some correlation. It is still a nice place but some feel the county is nicer than the city but as with any place you just look into areas that. you are interested in.
