I live in Alexandria and want to retire in 2-3 years. I plan to sell my home and move to a less expensive, less congested area in Virginia. Although there’s no guarantee of future housing prices, if I were to move now, I would be looking at homes below $400k. I am a single female. My needs are few but I would like to live near high quality medical care, great local food and attractions/activities (e.g. hiking trails, star gazing, farmers markets, etc). Any suggestions?

Default Is Virginia a good state to retire in?

Virginia is the top state to retire to, according to a new study from WalletHub. Virginia has a good balance of affordability, quality of life and health care, ranking high in all three categories. WalletHub points to the commonwealth's tax friendliness to retirees and great access to adult volunteer activities

Bristol…. Tennessee. Bristol is on the state line and why not enjoy the Virgina benefits with no state income taxes; your retirement would be tax free for state taxes.

Great hiking and close to Johnson city, which is known for good medical care. It’s in the tri state area so you can take advantage of the different sales taxes in Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.

Why stay a Virginia resident in retirement and get taxed by the state when most states exempt retirement income?

Good link for sales taxes, by states….

Thanks for the suggestions, these are wonderful. I’ve heard about Williamsburg and I need to check it out. I need to visit Lynchburg too.

I like Winchester. Roanoke and Bristol seem pretty nice.Bristol came to mind as a possibility, for exactly the reasons mentioned….it’s on the border and Tennessee has no state income tax.

I saw the article on VA as a good state for retirees, which is what made me consider remaining here.

Time for me to explore and spend some time in each of the suggested locations. I’m.casting a wide net, and am considering a few other states.

Appreciate the responses

Dental is outrageously expensive in VA, as a hole. Outside of population centers, grocery shopping is borderline awful.. Food Lion sucks, and Kroger isn't far behind... Five years ago it was much better.
