Hello,

I'm considering moving out of New York State. I've lived here all of my life (35 years) but am looking for a change and a better life for my family. The taxes and cost of living keep rising (so does the insanity of the politicians but that is mostly everywhere... I digress)and I don't see relief anytime soon.

I am considering VA. Can anyone suggest good places in VA? I'm looking for an area that borders on suburban/rural (I live in Queens County and would like an area that is like Central/Eastern Nassau County in the '70s and '80s in terms of density).

I work in IT and could possibly work remotely with my current employer.

I'm also a Freemason, so if anyone on this board is one I'd also appreciate some guidance on local lodges (if, in fact I do move to VA.... TN, NC, SC and GA are in the running).

I don't want too much, do I? Thanks in advance for all your help!!!!

Allen

Hi there! If you're looking for the edge of suburbia, and you are in IT, I would suggest Loudoun county west of DC or Faquier or Gainesville in Prince William county. These are farther out suburbs of DC but still have rural aspects left to them. Loudoun is as far as I know half semi rural and half suburban sprawl. Prince William is also very suburban east of Gainesville and Faquier is mainly rural. Warrenton is it's central town with all the basic shopping needs. Faquier is the center, or close to it, of the VA hunt country. Not redneck hunting but fox and hound hunting. Very wealthy area.

Other areas you might want to consider are the Richmond burbs. Hanover and Chesterfield counties or parts of Henrico might fit the bill for you too. Richmond has tech jobs, but not on the scale that DC has, but it would be worth a look as it is much cheaper and only 90 or 100 miles from DC. Sorry I don't know what Nassau county was in the 70's as I wasn't born yet much less lived there.

I know you're looking at other areas as well, but a small side note, from VA you can go home and visit family and friends easier! Without traffic from DC it's maybe 4.5 to 5 hours and 6(?) from Richmond. Both have airports that fly direct to NYC. In any case hope your move goes well!

I forgot to mention that pretty much every town and city in the state has a Freemason lodge. In my town(Staunton) there's even one. The former Masonic Temple is on of the largest buildings downtown. Alexandria has a big Masonic monument for George Washington that you can see for miles on clear days as well. It helped that so many of the founding fathers were freemasons from VA.
