i'm new to the Virginia area and I'm looking to go primitive camping... you know the kind where its just you and nature. I'm looking for a place about an hour and a half out of Richmond east or west it doesn't matter. Anyone got any ideas? thanks.

A little more west of Richmond is the Jefferson & Washington Nat'l Forest. North of Buchanan off I-81 is the North Creek Campground, it is very basic but is a favorite in the fall with hunters. There are many black bear in the
mountains there, nothing like a traditional campground, only for the rugged few. Lots of interesting rock formations, mountain streams, etc. If you really want to get away this is the place!

West of Richmond is Cumberland State Forest and Bear Creek Lake State Park. I don't know how primative they are but it could be what you're looking for and it's not that far away from Richmond, just off of Rt. 60.

Well.....an hour drive from Richmond isn't going to get you into the mountains, that's for sure.
So....unfortunately I cant help with flatland camping on the Piedmont.
Nebat offers good suggestions.
