2016 Volkswagen Jetta Rated at 40 MPG Hwy with New Base Engine
This should make the Jetta more competitive. Before, only way to get great fuel economy was the more expensive turbo diesel. Great if you travel mostly highway miles, only ok for around town driving and not worth the extra cost. Even in the automatic version, the city and highway fuel economy numbers are competitive. At least they're dropping the very weak 2.0 VW has been using on base models.

I expect the Jetta to do well with that very good fuel economy. I looked through the gallery and didn't see a wagon. I would prefer the wagon to the sedan. Hopefully VW puts these engines into the Golfs. The Golf is a nice looking hatchback especially lowered and with aftermarket wheels.

The wagon is offered as the Golf sportwagon now. Same car, different name.

One thing to keep in mind is that diesels normally beat the highway EPA mpg figures. Furthering the gap.

Does the new engine require premium?

2016 VW Jetta Compact Sedan with Performance & Value | Volkswagen

It's the base engine at 150 hp. It does have several engine choices. 1.8L turbo 170 hp, 2.0L turbo GLI 201 hp engine, turbo diesel engine, and hybrid power train.

Except that it uses diesel which, around here, costs 25% more and isn't available at every station.

Diesel is 20-25 cents cheaper a gallon here. It's only in the winter when diesel costs 20-25 cents more a gallon here.

The base engine only requires 87 octane. The 1.8t only requires 87 octane.
