Well that was a problem in the ACC wasn't it, the "paycheck" wasn't close to what the Big 10 offered. But money aside, adding Pitt and Syracuse won't move College Park any closer to Carolina.

Just pointing out that you aren't any further out on the Big 10 frontier than you were in the ACC in reality. Maryland had one ACC hoops tournament here in about 20 years I think, not exactly a lot of respect from the ACC.

I wonder why Mr Under Armour couldn't donate $50M to keep some of those non-revenue sports going. I do wonder how much it'll cost to send all those non-revenue teams to Nebraska, Minnesota, etc.

If U-Conn is coaxed away to the ACC, it's a wash in FB, some access to the NYC market, and way better in basketball. OTOH, if Florida State decides it's time to go, UVA and Virginia Tech will have to find someone who'll want both of them (VT is better in sports but UVA is better in academics and has the AAU membership).

I can see FSU bolting for another conference. A 16-team super conference is inevitable. But I'm not sure the B1G is interested in the FL TV market. If FSU is picked up by a conference, it would be purely for FB and not TV money.

FSU and/or Miami joining the SEC is more dependent on U-Florida being okay with it than anything else.

(I think to join the Big 10 you have to be part of the Association of American Universities, of which FSU is not a part, but Florida is -- likewise UVA is part of the AAU and VaTech is not.)

Virginia Tech bolting to the SEC/Big 12 without UVA would **** off a lot of people -- IIRC, folks on the level of then-Gov. Warner had to twist UVA arms to vote to approve Virginia Tech. McDonnell/hypothetical successor may not be quite as militant about keeping UVA/VaTech together as Warner was, though.

If UVA were invited to the Big T14n along with (fill in the blank) and VaTech to the Big 12/SEC, that might be acceptable to the powers that be.

OTOH, I think FSU would bolt first; then and only then would UVA/VaTech be looking for new homes.

It's crazy to think of Maryland not competing against Duke and North Carolina. So much history is being pushed aside.

If UMD cant beat Boston college in the ACC how do they expect to win any games in the big 10 where almost every team is ranked

Also most Big10 schools are in the Great lakes area so what sense does it make for an East Coast school to play with them?

I wonder why they waited after the passage of the illegal alien Dream Act before makign this move and explaining all the budget shortfalls. Maybe they were afraid if people knew that our colleges were having these budget issues, the Dream Act might have been defeated? Andd I think part of the reason is also to budget more money to absorb the cost of the illegal aliens who will be attending College Park as a result of the Dream Act's passage. This is something terrible that now the entire state, all community colleges and all state universities will have to burden themselves with as the hordes of illegal alien Dreamers come knocking.

i was upset at firt the i read a good articl justifying the move.

The ACC basketball tournament is mostly played in NC. MD has hosted it twice in history.

Since the expansion football has 2 divisions. MD doesn't play the original teams very much under the new set up.

Raycom sports has the TV rights and MD doesn't get much viewing oit of the Raycom area. (I now live in NC and most MD basketball game are not shown here.)

The Big Ten Network will show more games which many more fans will be able to watch.

The deal with Notre Dame really ticked off a lot of teams. Notre Dame will compete in the ACC EXCEPT for football (?)

Notre Dame has it's own network and can pick which bowl it will play in. So why be in conference?

I don't think there is much difference in the distance of travel.

As much as I have enjoyed Duke and NC Virginia rivalry, the expansion has ruined a lot of that anyway.

bet of luck to MD.

I think in a few years there will be several major conferences covering most competitive schools. That way they can have a playoff system advancing to a national champion, which is what the NCAA wants anyway.
