Prince George's Co. Schools CEO Named | NBC4 Washington

Well it wont be official til Friday, but I think its pretty much a given right? Based on his resume I believe he is/will be a good pick. He knows the current system that is PG county, so you would assume he knows the points of emphasis that need to occur to improve it as a whole.

The biggest benefit is that he has worked at different levels of education system and his wife worked at Bowie. Not to mention his ties to Montgomery county and Anne Arundel. While I know he probably wont be MLK of education and totally swing the proverbial pendulum, I do think its best pick that could be made.

Lets see what happens over the course of next few years

This is wonderful news! I know Kevin Maxwell very very well. He is my former principal, and he could be a hard ass, but he made a lot of positive things come about. He is an excellent educator and I believe he was well-liked as principal of Walter Johnson High School in MoCo and Northwestern High School in Prince George's. He also lead Anne Arundel County Schools quite well (or so I heard). He was all about making change happen and he was able to get positive things done. I am quite excited!

I am one of the biggest critics of the school system and of some of the decision making that Baker has shown, but I think this is one of the better decisions made in a long time. Let's be honest, if there was a black superinten....CEO named, unfortunately you may see more laziness. Not saying that black people are lazy but we have a tendency to look the other way, pat each other on the back and not hold each other accountable. With someone of a different race, the bar is set much higher, likely there is less wiggle room for nonsense and people will be on the P's and Q's to do their job. I'm very interested in seeing how this will work. I honestly believe Baker knew this is probably the only way to make real change in the school system, and he probably had this objective all along. Although I disagreed with how he went about this, I think this might be the best thing for the school system.

The Washington Post has a much better write-up. I have shared this news with many of my former classmates, and everyone is really excited about Dr. Maxwell's appointment.

It does appear to be a sound, intelligent choice. But I expected no less from Baker, with all eyes on him at this point. From what I have read about the new CEO, I am looking forward to seeing what he can do. Hopefully the first step is do deal with the complacency and inertia within the system.

I agree. The bureaucracies were created for protection, but all too often, they are added without removing old bureaucracies or preforming a periodic overhaul to make sure red tape is not getting int he way of progress.

You all realize that the "bureaucrats" you want Dr. Maxwell to target are the people he started out teaching, coaching and becoming Administrators with, right?

I was speaking more of processes and procedures. Just like the PG Planning board had to streamline the planning process for development around metro stations, the same can be done for processes that hinder progress int he school system. Doesn't necessarily mean removing people.

This will come off as snarky and it's not meant to be, but what procedures? Many are embedded in various federal and state education laws.

Purchasing changes, yes. But when you get to student and employee rights there are tons of regulations and case law that drive the process.
