My husband and I are from the Midwest and are looking toward the DC area for his new job. We are from a small town and I would like to find another one near the DC area. We don't care if we live in VA or MD.

We would like a small town, with little crime, affordable housing, decent commute to DC, and nice area.

Any helpful places you can think of would be fabulous. Thank you

You can get any 3 of those, probably not all 5 together.

I agree with Joykins,

To get affordable housing, less crime and a small town feel, you won't be close enough for a comfortable commute into DC.

You will need to prioritize your wants. Decide what you're willing to trade on and then we can be of more help.

HTH and welcome to the area! :-)

Close-in affordable areas tend to be a little less nice or have more crime.

There are places with a small-town feel but they are not usually very close-in.

Bethesda/ Chevy Chase are nice areas and close in but I personally don't consider them affordable or small town.

Try Sterling, VA. New enough to still have some small town feel and available housing. Notice I said "available." AFFORDABLE is not even a concept here.

base upon what you describe I think college Park. What is your defination of affordable?
Whats your price range fora home? It depends upon how much you want to spend on housing.

Default Best area to live

Check out Frederick County, MD. Great small town but not too small, great shopping, schools and restaurants, also historic. I love the midwest but have lived in this area my whole life.

Actually, I think Purcellville (VA) fits all those descriptors except "reasonable commute to DC." Inasmuch as anything in the area is affordable and nice.

A really important piece of the puzzle is where in DC will your husband be working. This will really influence the recommendations you get.

Thanks to all of you who replied.
Affordable to us-- 250,000 or under
Where in DC-- not sure
Most important-- good schools, smaller town, and decent housing are more important. Is there a way to get that under an hour commute one way?

What about Frederick or Hagerstown?

Thanks again for your help!
