My husband and I are from the Midwest and are looking toward the DC area for his new job. We are from a small town and I would like to find another one near the DC area. We don't care if we live in VA or MD.

Try Sterling, VA. New enough to still have some small town feel and available housing. Notice I said "available." AFFORDABLE is not even a concept here.

Best area to live
Check out Frederick County, MD. Great small town but not too small, great shopping, schools and restaurants, also historic. I love the midwest but have lived in this area my whole life.

Actually, I think Purcellville (VA) fits all those descriptors except "reasonable commute to DC." Inasmuch as anything in the area is affordable and nice.
