Hello,

Currently I am residing in Fredericksburg VA area. My wife recently got a job in Bethesda MD (intersection of democracy blvd and fernwood rd). Her's is a contract job. I have a full time position. My company has another office in Chevy Chase MD. I am thinking about transferring to that location since commute for my wife takes about 2 hours one way.

We are a couple in early 30's. No kids yet. We are planning to rent for couple of years. Does it makes more sense to live in NoVA or somewhere in MD? I know the tax rates and all differ in MD and VA. I am also not sure about the living expenses/rent in MD and VA areas. Not sure what to do.

What are the recommended areas in MD if its advisable to stay close to the work area.

TIA

I agree--if you can afford it, stick with Rockville or Bethesda. Rent will be just as (if not more) expensive in NOVA, but your commutes would be terrible.

How much time does it take to travel from those areas to Chevy chase during peak hours? How is silver spring area? Is it cheaper to rent compared to bethesda and rockville?

TIA

Stick with Maryland. Commuting from Virginia to Maryland is a *****. I know people that have done it and it takes no less than two hours each way whether you use metro or drive the Beltway. People pay to break lease over this type of thing.

Bethesda is a great area if you can afford it. It is pricey though and pretty upscale and yuppified. Otherwise you can try Silver Spring. The downtown area is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from Bethesda. Silver Spring is a bit more urban than Bethesda, but also a bit cheaper. If you stick with downtown you will also be inside the Beltway and very close to the District.

One caveat about Rockville: the traffic is some of the worst I saw when I lived in Maryland. It is a nice area though.

True, but for a commute to Bethesda or Chevy Chase it is no big deal.

Thanks for the info. Yes Rockville/Bethesda/Chevychase is good area, although the apartments in that area are pricey. I looked at Silver spring area apartments and look much cheaper. Although I have heard some safety concerns about that area. I am not looking forward to stay in down town area in general.

How bad the traffic could be on I495 from SS towards bethesda?

I was also going to tour the Gaithersburg/Germantown area as well. Not sure if its going to be too far and bad idea to stay there? I also found some pointers towards Columbia and Burtonsville area through some other threads. Any opinions on that?

TIA

From SS to Bethesda you're best bet will be to East West Highway - 410.

Columbia and Burtonsville are too far for me. Gaithersburg to CC would be fine, if I were doing this commute. 270 would be rough, but it's not that far to CC IMO. I don't know what you can tolerate though.
