Due to a potential job change, we are looking at relocating to the DC metro area. I will be working right downtown in the District. My wife has not started looking yet. We have one child going into 2nd grade after this current school year. My hope is to find the best possible schools in an area that we can afford and where the commute is not completely brutal.

I lived in the DC area previously, but down in VA (I worked out in the Dulles area). I've been looking at rental and real estate listings in the Rockville Silver Springs and Gaithersburg areas, but I've been gone from that area long enough that I'm sure I have no concept if I am looking in the right direction or not. Any information or food for thought would be very much appreciated.

First off, what can you afford? Two, are you looking to rent or buy? House or Apartment?

This will really determine your options are, until we know what you can afford and what you're looking for it's hard to help.

The City is a true mixed bag, and I didn't hear great things about the DC schools...

For that much a month I would really depend on what your neighborhood preferences are. All the areas you listed are well liked. As for schools I can say the western and northernmost schools in the county tend to perform better.
