Hey all,

I might move later on this year to DC for school.

I've read (too much probably) about muggings in DC - esp. violent muggings (beatings, guns involved)....

I've lived in Montreal before, where i could walk anywhere at any time of day/night, and be 100% safe. I was never mugged or harassed there, and the thought of being mugged in DC is scaring the sh*t out of me, which is unfortunate.

DC obviously is a lot different, i have to get used to a whole new standard. What are chances of being mugged in NW DC (the 'good' areas) in the daylight/nighttime? I know Columbia Heighs is still transitional, I won't venture there much. Do men get mugged more than women? Viceversa? I am a 6'6, 210 lb guy, but obviously that won't matter much in a DC mugging..

I'll be honest it isn't bad. I don't walk around a ton every single night in DC, but I still have yet to be mugged *knock on wood*. It would be nice to live somewhere where I don't even have to be 'street smart' but unfortunately in DC you do. Don't walk around with your iPod out and earbuds in and you'll greatly lessen your chances of being mugged. Check over your shoulders every block or so. Stay in well-lit areas. Don't get ****faced drunk. Avoid the homeless... I have this theory that you could pull off a successful mugging by having one guy beg for change or cigarettes and when someone stops to give the guy change, his buddy mugs the guy. I don't know how often that happens if at all, but y'never know.

And don't be stupid about what you keep in your wallet. $20 in cash is enough, don't put your social security card in there. Write down the customer service numbers for your cards so you can report them stolen ASAP. Don't let the pieces of **** who mug you get anything out of it.

i have 2 friends- 1 female, 1 male- that lived in DC before for 2-3 years and never had any issues. They both think i'm crazy for overthinking it so much. Just want to hear opinions of more DC residents ..

Your chances of being mugged? Very, very small. Sure, muggings happen. And DC, like all American cities, has a higher violent crime rate than Canadian cities. But the odds of you being a victim are quite small, and can be made smaller still by taking basic precautions--not plugging into an iPod or cell phone at night, don't flash significant sums of cash, etc. I've walked around neighborhoods in central DC at all hours, day and night, for years and have never had a problem.

I've lived in the District east of Rock Creek Park for over 25 years and never been mugged. I know two people who have been mugged.

Avoid Chinatown. Just Kidding!!!! Just kidding!!!!! Chinatown is great. My FAVORITE part of the city, besides Pentagon City (where crime doesn't happen)

But yeah, if you act somewhat like you have common sense then you shouldn't have a problem. Don't over think it.

Just use common sense...
-do not wear ipod head phones on the street or metro
-do not walk alone if you can help it or at least follow a group
-stay on well lit paths
-stay out of the area's that have problems
-just don't carry everything you own on you..I only carry 20-40 dollars and a drivers license. My cc/debit and other cards sit at home in my desk....

2 through 5 are overkill unless you're walking at night in a rough section of town. Headphone are a bad idea walking anywhere.
