"Yes, of course there are tons of bars and places to go out, but there's sort of this shroud of uptightness and pretention that sort of smothers this city."
I experience this all the time, that's why I hang in baltimore from time to time...there's some real down to earth folks there.
Compared to most US cities DC has a good amount to offer. However, I would like to see:
1) More neighborhood delis, quick service food. DC has lots of M-F lunch places and high end food. But, it is really missing simple dinning. I have a hard time trying to find a decent turkey sandwich ( not potbellys/subway/quiznos) w/o having to travel across town.
2) More 24-hr grocery stores/pharmacys-the closest place to buy milk and toothpaste is a 20 min walk from my house. Plus, they close at 10:00 making it hard to buy last minute things.
2) authentic immigrant neighborhoods-
3) more of a happening mixed use DT- Dt DC has some retail and 7th street is always hopping, bit it isn't really on the level you would find in peer cities like SF or Bos. I try to support DC retail, but it is so much easier to head over to Pentagon City.
4) more Dupon Circle type civic spaces- too many of DC's civic spaces are underutilized dead zones.
5) more residents- fundementally, IMO, many of these problems could be helped by more residents. It would be nice if DC could get back to the 800k mark. It would be a boon for urban ammenities: neighborhood retail, pub tran, and civic institutions(parks, theaters, arts groups).
24/7 ethinic cuisine restaurants (miss the 24x7 falafel, kebob and tandoori chicken/ indian food joints in NYC yum). And of course 24x7 subway at least on the weekends; 3AM on weekdays would be fine. Yes on the skyscrapers too.
