I'll be moving to DC for about a four month stay soon. The place I'm likely to end up taking is located at 11th and Maryland NE close to the Atlas District neighborhood. What is everyone's impression of this area?
A few more specific questions:
1. Crime. Yeah, everyone asks. The DC Metro crime map didn't seem that bad, but does anyone have any more specific info towards any streets in this area to stay clear of at night? I'll be walking by myself at night a lot.
I did a Google street view for a few blocks around and it seems like a nice area with many well kept homes.
2. Grocery shopping. I won't have a car. Are there any small grocery stores, even a CVS in this area?
3. Public transportation. How long is the walk to Union Station metro from here? I assume that's the best metro stop to use in terms of proximity to the area.
4. Is $1,000 a good price for a small 1-BR? It seems like it.
5. Any cool spots in this neighborhood I should check out?
Thanks in advance. I've been lurking here for a couple weeks and enjoy reading the threads.
1. I was just in this area a few weeks ago and while it's still kinda transitional, it's coming along nicely. I walked around pretty late in the evening and didn't feel threatened, but you always have to keep your wits about you wherever you are in DC. It's definitely not the worst area in the city: go to Metropolitan Police Department (http://crimemap.dc.gov/presentation/query.asp - broken link) and put in the address of the apartment so you can get an idea of the crime levels.
2. There's a Safeway at 1601 Maryland Ave NE. You could always get a Zipcar membership if you need to make a run to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's.
3. Union Station is about a 5 minute bus ride. Check out WMATA to help give you an idea of public transit options.
4. $1,000 is a decent price. You may pay less in some 'hoods, more in others.
5. Atlas Performing Arts Center - Washington DC community-based performing arts center (http://www.atlasarts.org/plan_lounge.php - broken link)
