Hello all,

I am moving out to DC for about a year starting July 2011 - I'm a teacher taking a year's sabbatical to volunteer in various Smithsonian museums and play in the city for time. I was planning to stay at Thompson-Markward Hall (the nunnery) near the Capitol Building, but I'm on the waiting list. It's 900 a month for a private room/shared bathroom with 2 meals a day included, and I'd be able to walk to the National Mall from there, so I could save on transportation. It made the situation ideal. If I don't end up getting a space, any suggestions on other extended stay housing? If I'm looking through apartments on Craigslist, any suggestions on neighborhoods? I'd love to avoid needing a car in the city unless anyone had fabulous insight into cheap parking...

Thanks for any help

If you're volunteering at the Smithsonian as part of an official program, you may qualify for the MetroCheck program. This program subsidizes public transportation costs for federal employees. Check with your coordinator for details.
