I actually looked at buying at that intersection a year ago and really liked the area. I ended up a few blocks away and haven't had any problems. That being said, I'm 6'7"/250, and I still don't roll the dice walking alone late at night in that area.
The area is getting much much better almost by the month, but let's just say I wouldn't let my hypothetical daughter live there alone just yet.

Much better than it used to be. All of the Mt. Vernon Triangle development occuring immediately to the south is having an impact on this neighborhood. Additional development is ongoing and/or planned for the next several years, so plan to see even further changes.
That said, the area is still very much transitioning, to you do need to keep your wits about you when walking around. Id be OK living there, but that's me.
Great as an investment area if you are looking to buy now and sell in 10 years. A bit different if this is going to be your home in the next few weeks.
"Transitioning" is the best word to describe it. Used to be much worse than it is now.
Take a look for at the crime map and judge for yourself
Metropolitan Police Department (http://crimemap.dc.gov/presentation/intro.asp - broken link)
unless you're a Mixed Martial Arts expert, I'd recommend somewhere else
few more years of "transitioning" needed over there
Absolutely. I was shocked that people here were advising that area to a young woman.
