Hello, I am moving to the D.C. area with two children. I don't know much about the schools or their athletic programs. Which school districts or cities are known for their athletic programs? Being that I'm from Texas originally, any football info would be greatly appreciated.

For Football, you probably want to go to Virginia. I am from the south as well and I can tell you that High School football in this area sucks.

Sounds good. Knowing that I am not in the South, I'm not expecting big extravagant facilities, like I see in Texas. I'm just looking for places for my kids to compete. Does this area seem to place a bigger emphasis on other sports like b-ball?

Yeah, Basketball tends be bigger on the East Coast in general.

football is quite big in NoVa.

My kid went to TJ, nerd heaven, and even there homecoming, etc were the big social events. My DD being particularly nerdy, did color guard (band is nerds of the nerds) so I got to go to LOTS of football games (which TJ almost always lost). There are schools in FFX, loudon, and Prince william with much more serious football programs. alexandria is home to TC williams, the school featured in "remember the Titans".

for more info go ask in the NoVa forum.

Riiiiight. Try and take a look at DeMatha in Hyattsville, MD. Not only do they have a good basketball program, but they also lead the entire country for most active players in the NFL. Many other good schools in the area for sports too.

Just checked out Dematha. Not bad.... Would prefer a public school as tuition is not something I'm looking to pay for high school, but very impressive.

At least in NoVa, the main public high school that comes to mind for football is Stone Bridge in Ashburn (Loudoun County). There are a lot of folks with connections to the Redskins who send their kids there (and the kids consistently win games and get to state playoffs, anyway). As far as I know, the other sports teams at Stone Bridge aren't nearly as good, but they excel at football.

Other public schools in NoVa area that typically have good teams are Westfield, Chantilly, Lake Braddock and Oakton. Not surprisingly, they are among the larger high schools in the area.

Went to Gonzaga, which is a huge rival of Dematha's. Their basketbal program is top notch, football not so much but basketball is our bread and butter. I think they went 34-1 last year, something like that. I know they were ranked nationally.

You can't go wrong with the private schools in this area, great education and if your kids are good at sports, chances are high they will get a D-1 scholarship out of it. I know in my class, we went a couple of kids to D-1 schools, most notably Princeton. I believe a couple of players play for Duke right now.
