I'm interested in joining a health club for 2012, but I'd like opinions on some in the area:

Equinox (Bethesda): I was quoted ~$150 joiner fee and ~$140/mo., but if you sign up in January, and go to the club at least 12x within the first 30 days of joining, the joiner fee is waived.

L.A. Fitness Signature Club (Rockville/White Flint/N. Bethesda): I was quoted three levels of pricing:
*$39.99/mo. on a month to month with $149 joiner fee;
*$64.99/mo. on a month to month with no joiner fee; or
*$1,348.00 for 3 years, and after 3 years, $319.00/year.

I'm also thinking about visiting Lifetime Fitness and the Sports Club/LA (DC). I'm interested in places with pools (hopefully kept warm) and spinning classes.

Equinox notes:
There's no parking in Bethesda except for the municipal lots and street parking, so that's a negative. Also, they have a small lap pool and steam room, but they don't have a sauna or whirlpool. They also do not have a racquetball or basketball court. But they do have hand towels in the refrigerator that have been chilled in eucalyptus water. (?!?) Looks like a very middle-aged, WASPY crowd goes there. The quote is only for access to the Bethesda location. They have a spa and salon. Fitness trainers are extra. You get a physical evaluation and a work out plan when you join.

LA Fitness Signature observations:
you get two free hours of parking, but they seem not to have towels when you need them, and the layout is sort of strange. Also, nothing to wipe down the equipment is on the floor, which is sort of strange. Hard sales tactics by Shah, the GM. Not sure if the online offers are better. The quote allows for access to all LA Fitness and LA Fitness Signature clubs nationwide, except for NYC (extra fee). Looks like more of a mixed crowd (age wise and racially).

Does anybody have any info about Lifetime (Potomac/Rockville/Columbia), Sports Club/LA (DC), or other clubs? I am interested in hearing what you think about them, and what kind of deal you got.

Thanks!
