I'm wondering if anyone knows what special documentation I need to register a co-owned vehicle in DC? I'll be the primary owner, but my dad, who lives in the Midwest, is also on the title. The DMV seems to suggest I need his valid ID - but this seems crazy to me - would he have to mail me his drivers license? Can I just have him sign the registration form instead?
I'm wondering if anyone has done this before and knows what I will need.
Love to hear some feedback on this. 1) getting married; 2) merging households in DC; 3) buying & insuring a car as CO-owners; 4) one person already a DC resident but the other wants to retain current residency in another state until the end of the tax year.
So: do BOTH parties need to be DC residents in order to register the vehicle in DC? Thanks a bunch!
Oops: I think this addresses my question: "To register a vehicle in the District you—or at least one person listed on the vehicle title—must be a District resident. Only the District resident(s) will be listed on the vehicle registration. The residency requirements for vehicle registration and DC DMV driver licenses are the same."
Looks like we are good...Anything I'm missing?
However, I have a little more complicated situation. I am the current owner of my car which has a bank lien on it. Wife moving to DC and we are thinking of adding her name to the car so we become co-owners. I would be in another state. So how to register a car in DC if one of the co-owners is DC resident but the other non DC resident co-owner is on the lien/ loan?
