Is anyone familiar with the area around 16 St and Harvard? I think the Mexican Consulate, Embassy of Switzerland and Scottish Rite are in that area. Is it safe to walk there from, say, the Columbia Heights metro?
I'm not very familiar with this area of DC and I have been reading some Columbia Heights threads, but it seems like things can change a lot from block to block, and that's why I'm hoping someone familiar with the area can give me his/her opinion. Thanks!
In general, walking from 16th to 14th along Harvard, Columbia, or Irving should be pretty safe. There are some muggings that occur, but if you keep your eyes open it should be fine. The area south of there (between Meridian Hill Park and 14th) is actually worse. I'd avoid some of those streets (Euclid, Clifton) after dark.
After visiting the area, I have to say I didn't even feel remotely unsafe. Now, I don't know the rest of Columbia Heights, but that particular area of a few blocks around the metro station was actually very nice. Like mycrows said, lots of people.
Its fine. Ten years ago there was quite a bit of property crime but seriously, its so gentrified now its not funny.
Some people are scared of anything. In which case, there are plenty of "safe" suburbs to explore. I lived at 16th and Fuller for almost twelve years and walked that walk thousands of times. There is one weird house at the corner of 17th and Euclid (I think that is the corner- everyone knows about it) where there are rowdy stoop sitters at all hours of the day and night and constant police presence. But that is a little further down from your route.
