I work in Reston and hoping to find somewhere to live where the commute would be no more than one hour. I work 9-5pm. I also want a neighborhood that is very safe! Please also if you could give some pricing on apartments/condos (for rent) in the areas that would be great. I am interested in either 1 or 2 bedrooms.

Thanks in advance

I suggest Glover Park, although my car was broken into there. Also the American University Park and Foxhall Village areas. I would use Realtor.com for rental searchs on the 20007 zip code, so you can easily do it yourself, however, the rents start at $1700-1800 for a 1 bedroom and go to the ridiculous range. The Archstone at 3850 Tunlaw Road is the type of place I would suggest.

Why do you want to live in DC, when you work in Reston? There are plenty of safe neighborhoods in Virginia closer to Reston.

The usual confusion between greater DC, and the District.

OP

You will mostly likely end in northern virginia. No where there is REALLY unsafe - especially not the areas from north arlington out to Loudoun that could conceivably make sense for you - a few sheltered suburbanites have a issues with some of the very cheapest parts of reston itself, some parts of herndon (but its a great place to hire day labor, I think) and parts of the Sterling section of Loudoun County. Mostly you should be fine. for more info ask in the NoVa forum. You should have some idea of how you want to prioritize commute time, cost, and neighborhood amenities, and what lifestyle you prefer (urban, suburban, rural, etc)

If you are looking for advice on Greater DC, I highly recommend the Fair Oaks area of Fairfax County. It's close to the mall, Target, Pei Wei, REI and the traffic isn't too terrible. It will take you about 30 minutes to get to Reston and there's some alternative routes to use in case of an accident. I used to work in Reston and lived in Fairfax and it was a nice, safe place to live with lots of amenities.

Thanks. If I had realized the OP was confusing the District and greater Washington, DC, I would not have wasted my time.

There are really no safe parts anymore because even if there is no crime you are still going to be robbed by the prices they are charging for rent. In some cases this is worse than being mugged on the streets.

Upper NW (and suburban) is as safe as it gets. Though, to be honest, most nabes on this side of the river aren't especially bad, at least when compared to the past.
