Hi there,

I'm thinking about renting a place near 11th and Columbia. I looked on the DC crime map, and it seems muggings are pretty common, but otherwise it seems ok. I'm just looking for general opinions on the area. Thanks!

That area is a LOT better than it used to be 5+ years ago. I grew up at Sherman Ave + Columbia Rd during the 90s and compared to that, the area is now Pleasantville. Are muggings common? No more than in most other areas in DC. As long as you don't walk around looking like a tourist, most people will leave you alone.

That being said, it's a very bike-friendly area (God knows, as I hate driving or parking anywhere near there), with plenty of things to do along 14th Street. Metro accessible, a bit construction-heavy but otherwise just fine. Be prepared to pay for the convenience, though!

I live a few blocks down on 11th and Euclid and ditto to what the poster above said. If you walk around at night being flashy then that will attract negative attention. Property crime is gonna be high because A. There is a lot of "money" in Columbia Heights and B. There is low income housing and housing projects in the neighborhood so you know how that goes. Otherwise you are gonna be in a prime area with like 10 or more bus lines close by as well as the metro station and lots of shopping and dining options.

Maybe its just me but Sherman Ave reminds me of Baltimore....looks wise at least.

Ah, close but not quite! All the houses have that whole row-house thing going on, but in Baltimore you step off your house threshold and get hit by a car. At least on the Ave, you have something passing as a front lawn!

Now that you say it, I can totally see that. It's not very DC like.

Thanks for the information. I'm in Adams Morgan now, and it doesn't sound like I need to take any more precautions there than I would here.

i have a friend who lives at the corner of Irving and 11th street. He personally likes the area because of the diversity, convenience, and reasonable rent. However, sirens are going on frequently at night. He hasn't got mugged yet, but he did witnessed shooting once...
