I rented a basement apartment that I later found out is probably illegal and I wanted to at least make sure it was reasonably safe, especially since if there is a fire I have a slim chance of getting out through the bedroom windows. I don't think the owner has conducted any type of safety inspection and doesn't seem concerned about whether the unit is safe. My most pressing concerns are electrical and gas hazards.
I got a quote from a private home inspector who will do the inspection for $275, which I think is a great price. However, he's not able to check the safety of the gas lines. Since he would primarily be inspecting for electrical hazards, would it be better if I hired an electrician instead of a general home inspector?
