planning on traveling to DC end of December/1st week of January. I will have a car, but if there's too much traffic during that time, I'd rather stay close to all the tourist attractions, or use public transportation. I'd like to know if there are any hotels downtown that do not charge extra for parking/wifi etc. Or, if there any other cool areas on the outskirts of DC, but close to metro station/public transport. Thank you in advance for all the helpful tips.
I don't think there are any hotels in DC proper that don't charge for parking. Unlike in West Palm Beach where free parking lots all over the place, those are rare in DC because it's a very dense city where space is at a premium. Having a car is not only unnecessary but actually a burden for visiting DC not only because of traffic but also because of parking fees that are usually higher than the cost of riding public transit.
But if you must have a car, I believe hotels in parts of Arlington, Virginia (just across the river from DC) such as Rosslyn or Crystal City charge less for parking than hotels in DC, and are just a few minutes away from the tourist attractions by Metro (the name for DC's subway system).
