Hi everyone, Im coming to the area this coming week for work but will have some time to explore. What are things that I could check out during the week nights generally after 5pm? Ive done some looking and noticed essentially every museum is closed. I want to stop by the monuments and see some items. What and where would you recommend to see/go? This applies to tourist items, shopping, restaurants, and or bars. I will be staying near the pentagon but will plan to use the metro to get around. Its been a few years since Ive been to the city.

Otherwise, I'd spend your time trying good restuarants, whatever interests you. I'd be interested in the Capitol City Brewing Company at 1100 New York Ave NW. Maybe also the Old Ebbitt Grill for its history.
Most of the monuments are open at night. There are also some monument night tours. I highly recommend the "monuments by moonlight" tour that leaves from Union Station.
Depending on what days you're in town, the Phillips collection has an after 5 event on the 1st Thursday of the month. All of the exhibits are open, and there's usually a free performance of some kind that relates to the rotating exhibit, and drinks for purchase. I've been a couple of times and really liked it. It's a private museum so it costs to go in. The museum is in the DuPont Circle area, close to lots of bars and restaurants.
The portrait gallery is typically open until 7pm. It's in the Gallery Place/Chinatown area, so close to lots of bars/restaurants you can visit after. Jose Andres and Mike Isabella are two of the big celeb chefs in DC and both have restaurants near the portrait gallery you could check out - google Jaleo, China Chiclano, Zaytinya and Graffiato.
Also, the Kennedy center has a free show every evening at 6. They typically post the lineup a week or two in advance on their website...just look for "millennium stage" to see if there is something that interests you. Also, go up to their deck for a great view of the river.

Don't do Old Ebbitt Grill. And if you do, go in from the G street side, through the outdoor seating, and in to the main. It's really not worth it though.
What you want is to go check out Black Cat and what's around it. Maybe you're lucky, and see something amazing.
For your situation though, I would definitely suggest: Gravelly Point Park. Go there, if it's cold out, bring a jacket, but definitely check that out.

That "park" sucks. Unless the OP has never seen an airplane or a soccer field before, I would not recommend it.
