I will be finishing grad school this year, and I was fortunate enough to land a great job in the DC area.

However, I was very worried about the photo radar / speed camera issues.

Does anyone here know what speed will set off the camera? Also, will these violations add points to a driving record or be reported to insurance companies?

Thank you very much.

Its a pain. I think it is 5 MPH over, but I am not sure. I drive by two of them on my way to work, and every day the flow of traffic is fine, then people slam on their brakes to 10 MPH below the speed limit, almost causing a pile-up, then they resume speed. Its cute...

I got a ticket from one, and it turns out they do not report it. They only come after you if you dont pay it, but it is not worth any points, insurance does not know, etc... It is purely revenue

That plus enforcement of the speed limit.

The ticket scores against the vehicle, not a driver. I would think your insurance company would regard that as an issue when writing your policy.

nothing gets reported to the insurance company. I called the city and asked what would happen if I did not pay it and they said that while it does not get reported to insurance, the city will come after me, so I paid it.

It is actually kinda funny. I just read an article about police officers getting tickets in police cruisers for speeding in Montgomery County. There is this whole debate in which the officers feel that they should not be responsible for the fines because they do not own the cars, but the county wants them to pay for it. I love it...

I think it is 11mph over, and the cameras are mounted on cars so they are not permanent. That said, some of them do try to hide a bit and snap folks going by.

Just ask USAA to explain the changes. You don't have to volunteer that you received speed camera tickets.
