Both are good areas as well but if working in DC places like Vienna, Oakton and Burke are quite a bit closer, and just as nice.

Oh, I agree, but I am speaking from my experience. I also have a different commute as I work in Old Town Alexandria rather than the district. The good news is we now have the silver line in Reston.

The Silver Line is definitely a great perk for Reston but unfortunately the schools aren't anywhere near the best. There are some good ones in Herndon but it's a schlep to Metro.

You will know by now that 2k budget is not going to work to live in DC unless you go SE or NE across the river.

If public school is your concern, NW DC (west of Rock creek park) has good schools, but you will need to double the budget to stay there.

Depending on what you are looking for, there are different areas to consider. I can give more information if you can share what you are looking for exactly.
