What are the best natural vistas inside the Beltway. I'm thinking of places like Arlington House or Cedar Hill where you can see for miles. What are some other good ones?

Fort Lincoln was until they let the attics of the new townhomes block the panoramic view.

One of my favorites is the Kennedy Center rooftop vista. There is a restaurant up there, but you don't have to visit the restaurant to walk out on the roof. In so far as I know, that is still open to the public for free.

If you don't mind splashing some cash, there are multiple boat tours that offer a wonderful view from the Potomac River. Being cheap, I normally rent a kayak from the Park Service at Thompson's Boat House. Thompaon'a ia a short walk from the Kennedy Center - maybe 15 minutes?

In the early spring, I always walk the Mt Vernon trail. If you time it right you get a lovely view of the Cherry Blossoms on the east bank and thousands of daffodils simultaneously blooming on the west bank. There are a number of places to pick up the trail but I think the best views can be found from the part of the trail that is close by the Arlington Cemetery Station metro stop.

The best view I have ever seen in the entire DC region was from the lawn of the Lady of our Perpetual Help Church in Anacostia. It’s technically private property though, but it’s arguably the best view in town.

Honorable mention to portions of the Mt. Vernon trail near Alexandria, the parking lot of the Cardozo School, and the Air Force Memorial.
