Default New to DC

I am about to relocate to the DC area due to a new job. I am fresh out of college and am starting to look for a good place to live. I will be working a between union station and the white house.

I want to live in a decent area and am willing to pay up to $1,300 in rent. Where is the best place to live? Currently I am registered in MD. Is it worth it to move to VA or to the DC city limits? Where would be the best place to live and commute?

I am looking forward to moving to DC, but there are just so many different things to think about. Are there any commuter discounts for people who use the metro to commute? A monthly pass? What is the best type of transportation to use (metro, VRE, MARC, etc..). I still have not explored DC yet so i don't really know the differences in any of these. I only know what i read online.

Any help with this would be great. Thank you
