I've been reading some of the threads on this site and really like the helpful advice people give. So, I'm wondering if any could help me out.
Essentially, I am trying to find the correct price range and location of an apartment in the city.
I would be taking a job up in Gaithersburg, MD for 65k/year. I plan on taking the red line to shady grove for the commute to save on gas/sanity/mother earth. I'm a single 25yr old guy so the big city is what appeals to me. (Although does anyone know what it's like in Gaithersburg/Rockville?) I have a paltry amount of student loans and plan on getting a new car, so the most affordable place would be great, but ideally I would like a rowhouse-type location that's easy walking to the red line.
Downtown Rockville might be a better fit for your life style. Rockville is pricier than Gaithersburg but you have plenty of amenities within walking distance and the Rockville Metro station is in the downtown area. I don't know if you can afford to rent a townhouse in Rockville, but you can definitely snag a decent 1 or 2 BR apartment for under $2,000/month.
BTW...$65K is not bad for 25 years of age. Are you working in biotech?

This is a research job in engineering. I think it should be a fun change of pace for me.
How is Rockville? I mean I've cruised around on google streetview and wasn't very impressed. It seems like a residential only type of city. Is there a city center with things going on? Will I need to drive my car just to leave the neighborhood?
City Center..lol, you need to hit vegas for that lad. Get yourself a crib/apt in the city and catch the train to work. All train lines connect at metro station, so catching the red to shady is least than 30 minutes, give or take. Don't get yourself all stressed out about the commute via train. Hell, your 25. gl
