I've driven through many areas and it seems I never see kids outside. I'm looking for an area easily commutable to D.C., preferably with a sense of community, and a neighborhood with lots of playmates for my kids and of course great schools. It seems there are many housing developments but not many places with a sense of community. Any ideas?

I love Barcorft Community in Arlington VA. It reminds me of the good ole days.

Arlington, Alexandria, Potomac, and Bethesda. Alexandria and Potomac being on the more expensive end.

Falls Church or Takoma Park
Unfortunately, you may not see many kids outside, even in the most cohesive communities. For various reasons relating to over-scheduled children and over-cautious parents, many kids just don't play outside much these days.
But you really need to specify your housing budget in order to get helpful suggestions.

Bowie md. Very safe, great schools, family oriented and great DC commute on blue/orange lines.

Have you considered Southern Maryland? The commute is a little longer than the other suggested areas, however, my experience has been great concerning quality of life, sense of community, school experience and general standard of living. The benefits of the area certainly out-weigh the difference in the commute.
