I will be moving to DC in August to go to Georgetown Law (which is located on the red metro line, by the Union Station stop). I've been looking for apartments on Craigslist and Rent.com/apartments.com but there hasn't been that much information.

Any suggestions on safe areas or apartments to live in? I will probably have a roommate and looking to pay (hopefully) no more than $2000-$2500 a month for a 2 bedroom. Is that even realistic? We're two girls, so we're looking for something in a safe, walkable to the red line, clean, in a good area, and no roaches/mice.

I know Adams Morgan and Dupont are two areas that I've heard good things about, so does anyone who lives in that area have any suggestions for good apartment buildings?

I don't have specific building advice, but Dupont and Adams Morgan are both good areas. Adams Morgan is a little further from the metro, though. Georgetown Law is also only about 5 blocks from the Chinatown metro stop, so you can look at places along the yellow/green metro lines as well (i.e. U Street).

For a decent 2-bedroom in the District, you can swing it with that budget, but you might be hitting towards the top end. You can try Virginia, like Pentagon City/Crystal City or Maryland (Silver Spring).

You should be able to live just about anywhere you want. For $2500, you will have almost no problems getting a great 2BR. Especially right now when all the rental companies are offering one or two months free with a new lease. Stay on the red line for the sake of convenience. Look at Gallery Place/Chinatown, which is full of restaurants and bars and about as close as you could live to school (though perhaps a bit more noisy and crowded than I would want if I was a grad student), Dupont (which is generally considered to be the nicest and most desirable part of DC), Woodley Park (stay on Connecticut or nearby -- if you venture too far into the Adams Morgan side, it'll be a much longer commute each day), and Cleveland Park (one of my favorite neighborhoods... lots of restaurants and shops, but has lots of trees and not quite as busy and crowded as Dupont, and certainly WAY better than Chinatown).
